Freeridge Ending Explained: The Truth About Mariluna

Gloria and her crew sail into a supernatural mystery that tests their bond.

Netflix’s Freeridge marks the official debut of the new core four, a group of friends entangled in a mystery that begins with the discovery of a strange box, leading to a series of unfortunate events. Gloria Salazar takes the lead among the teens as they band together to lift a curse threatening dire consequences.

Alongside Gloria are her younger sister Ines and her best friends Demi and Cameron. As they pass their high school lives, the friends experience numerous ups and downs while trying to reverse their bad luck.

The first season consists of eight episodes filled with intriguing hints from On My Block, leaving viewers questioning how the season concludes. Continue reading to uncover all the details regarding the finale of Freeridge.

Is Abuelita Marisol Resurrected?

One of the most intriguing connections between Freeridge and On My Block arises in the premiere episode, where Geny and Ruben Martinez—Ruby’s parents from OMB—sell a box to Cameron during a yard sale. Soon after Cameron’s purchase, a mysterious woman appears, offering him a higher amount to buy the box back.

When the friends open it and find a picture of a woman, they seek answers from Geny, who shocks them by revealing that the woman is Marisol “Abuelita” Martinez from OMB, who has passed away.

The group, understandably startled, fears they are dealing with a real ghost. However, in the third episode, Demi discovers a note identifying the woman as Mariluna, not Marisol.

Who Is Mariluna?

Mariluna is introduced as Marisol’s twin sister, also known as Ruby’s Abuelita from OMB. A bond develops between Gloria and Mariluna over the course of the series.

Their initial conversation intended to confront Mariluna unexpectedly reveals her closeness to her twin, despite having been estranged after Marisol married a wealthy man named Harry Fordman. Mariluna explains that she sent the box to Marisol as a gesture to show she still cared for her.

Is the Box Cursed?

The enigmatic box serves as a pivotal element in Freeridge. Initially, Gloria suspects the box carries a curse, but Mariluna clarifies the misunderstanding. She shares that she and Marisol used to prank people by claiming that objects were cursed.

While Mariluna and Marisol enjoyed their inside joke and the reactions it elicited, the new core four remained unaware of the truth, leading to their justified apprehension.

To further investigate the idea of curses, Demi and Ines consult a psychic, who reveals that the only true curse is one they choose to believe in, suggesting that their belief is what gives the box its perceived power.

Did Gloria Discover Rusty’s Secret?

Throughout the season, Cameron, Ines, and Demi conceal a major secret from Gloria. Tensions escalate right before Thanksgiving dinner as the trio deliberates whether to reveal the truth.

When Gloria enters Mariluna’s study and asks about their hushed conversation, Cameron and Demi attempt to change the subject, but Ines confesses that Rusty is an actor hired by their uncle to divert Gloria’s attention.

Gloria dismisses her sister’s claims and utters hurtful remarks regarding Ines’ connection to their late mother’s passing. The conflict intensifies when Gloria confronts Rusty at the dinner table, where he admits to accepting the job but reveals that his feelings for her have grown genuine.

After reflecting on her actions with Mariluna, Gloria realizes her mistake and approaches her sister and Rusty to apologize. Just before she does, Rusty and Ines share a kiss, hinting at lingering feelings between them, but unfortunately, Gloria does not witness the moment.

Is Mariluna Really Dead?

Tragically, it seems Mariluna meets her end in the first season of Freeridge. Before her death, she offers Gloria and her friends a choice: accept a check for $1 million each with specific conditions or opt for a more lucrative alternative.

If they could spend the money within three months without keeping any items, they would stand to win $10 million. Just as Gloria is about to choose, Mariluna leaves to tend to her estranged family, only to be confronted by Joker and Sad Eyes, who mistakenly identify her as Marisol. After clarifying her identity, Mariluna pulls out a gun in self-defense as the two men reveal their own weapons.

The scene shifts back to the core four deliberating over Mariluna’s offers, when suddenly, a gunshot is heard. The camera then reveals Mariluna slumped in her car, leading viewers to believe she may be dead.

Did Javier Die in Freeridge?

Throughout Freeridge’s first season, Ines and Gloria’s father, Javier, receives a cancer diagnosis and begins treatment. Fortunately, he survives the season finale, despite his condition worsening.

In his final appearance, Javier expresses nausea to Ines when she calls during Thanksgiving dinner. Although his daughters worry about him, Javier appears to have made it through the first season alive.

Did Demi and Cam End their Relationship?

Understanding that their relationship was the source of Cameron’s premonition, Demi and Cam mutually decide to part ways in a remarkably amicable breakup. They agree to return to being friends.

However, after their split, Demi experiences a change of heart and realizes that Cam is her soulmate, although she never reveals this to him. Fans of the show hope these two may find love again if the series continues for a second season.
