Bull Ending Explained: The Truth Behind Bull’s Survival in the Caravan Fire

Neil Maskell, known for his role in Kill List, delivers a gripping performance in Bull, a 2021 low-budget crime thriller that has gained immense popularity since becoming available on Netflix.

Directed by Paul Andrew Williams, the film follows Maskell’s character, a ruthless enforcer who resurfaces in his old territory a decade after a series of brutal and mysterious events involving him and his former gang.

Led by Norm (David Hayman), Bull’s merciless father-in-law, the gang members are still around, though their days are numbered. Bull is on a mission to exact revenge on those he believes betrayed him, though they find it hard to believe he has returned, seemingly convinced that such a thing should be impossible.

What Happens in Bull?

The story begins with a group of men burying something in a field at dawn before fast-forwarding ten years to Bull launching his violent rampage. His first act is shooting a man in the street, followed by a visit to his ex-wife’s sister’s home, where she lives with her husband. After killing them both, he turns his attention to tracking down his old associate Marco.

One by one, Bull hunts down members of the gang, determined to uncover the whereabouts of his ex-wife, Gemma, a drug addict who is also the mother of his son, Aiden. After eliminating or intimidating those standing in his way, he gathers enough information to track her down.

Upon reaching her town, he coerces a local dealer into revealing her approximate location. Since Gemma remains addicted to heroin, her dealer easily leads Bull straight to her.

Upon finding Gemma, Bull sets a trap for Norm. He restrains Gemma and waits for Norm to arrive, knowing he will check in on her. As soon as Norm steps inside, Bull strikes, stabbing him in the leg. In a reflexive panic, Norm fires his shotgun, wounding a helpless Gemma.

Bull then suffocates Norm while Gemma watches in horror. She finally reveals their son’s whereabouts, admitting that Aiden, now addicted to heroin himself, is living on the streets. With his final act of vengeance, Bull kills Gemma.

The film then switches back to the past, revealing what Norm and his gang actually did to Bull years earlier. Despite being a devoted father, Bull refuses to hand Aiden over to Gemma and disappear.

Enraged, Gemma orders her father to kill him. Bull is taken to a remote caravan, tied up, doused in alcohol, and set ablaze. As the fire consumes the caravan, Aiden watches in terror, screaming for his mother and grandfather to save Bull.

Against all odds, Bull momentarily escapes the flames, only to be shot dead. The gang buries his body in the same field shown at the beginning of the film. Bull did not survive that night.

In the present timeline, the film revisits Bull’s rampage, now from the perspectives of his victims. They see his eyes as an unnatural shade of black, terrified not just by his remorseless brutality, but by the undeniable fact that he is no longer among the living. It becomes clear that Bull is a vengeful spirit who has returned from beyond the grave to punish those responsible for his demise.

This supernatural element is reinforced when Bull, after killing Gemma, retrieves a drugged-up teenage Aiden from the streets and brings him to a church. Aiden, deeply scarred from witnessing Bull’s death as a child, has spiraled into addiction and despair.

The church’s vicar, seemingly aware of the unnatural darkness in Bull’s eyes, instinctively understands that he is not of this world. Bull gives the vicar money he took from the drug dealer, instructing him to use it to help Aiden get clean. With that, Bull departs, returning to the field where his body was buried.

Claiming he has been to hell, Bull implies that his mission of vengeance is complete and he must now return to the underworld.
