However, when the camera isn’t on her, Madison’s happiness quickly fades as she struggles with loneliness, feeling abandoned by her boyfriend, Ryan, who pulled out of the trip at the last minute. As Madison assesses Thailand on her own, it’s clear she’s not truly enjoying the experience.
Things take a turn for the better when Madison meets CW, a girl she encounters at a local bar. The two quickly hit it off and become friends, though CW isn’t quite as friendly as she initially appears.
As the story continues, Madison’s life becomes more complicated, and her situation worsens due to CW’s hidden agenda. She ends up going through a disturbing ordeal.
Who is CW?
Not much is revealed about CW at first, and we’re left wondering who she is or why she’s in Thailand. What we do know is that she has no love for social media, as shown in her reactions to Madison constantly posting updates about her trip.
As the movie progresses, we learn that CW has a peculiar ability to assume the identities of others. In the early scenes, CW seems like a caring friend, especially when she helps Madison avoid a creepy man who is hitting on her.
Later, when Madison’s villa is broken into, and she loses her passport, CW steps in to help, offering to stay with her so she won’t be alone. But after gaining Madison’s trust, CW takes things further, surprising her with an unplanned trip to a remote island. It’s not the fun escape Madison is expecting, however.
What Happens on the Island?
Madison’s stay in Thailand is extended after her passport is stolen, and she tries to keep Ryan updated about the situation. She cuts him off when he blames her for the theft. Thankfully, CW is there to cheer Madison up. When CW offers a boat trip to a secluded island, Madison starts to see the bright side of her prolonged stay.
But it soon becomes clear that CW doesn’t have Madison’s best interests at heart. After they arrive at the island, CW informs Madison that she will be leaving her there alone. She tells Madison that without fresh water, survival will be nearly impossible.
Madison assumes this is just a joke, but the situation turns real the next morning when CW leaves her stranded without any way to contact the outside world.
Why Did CW Leave Madison on the Island?
It’s unclear why CW would leave Madison in such a dangerous situation. Maybe she hates social media influencers and wants them to face the harsh reality of being alone, or perhaps she’s a sadistic person who enjoys seeing others suffer.
It could also be that CW plans to take over Madison’s life by stealing her villa and money. Once Madison is left behind, CW returns to the villa, making herself comfortable in Madison’s space.
She goes as far as to steal Madison’s identity, using photoshopped images of Madison and a voice generator to send fake messages to her followers, claiming that Madison is taking a break from social media. CW has done this before. Soon, she targets another influencer named Jessica.
After ‘accidentally’ meeting her in town, CW again lies, telling Jessica that she’s a loyal follower. This deception becomes evident when Ryan unexpectedly arrives in Thailand.
Why Is Ryan in Thailand?
Ryan’s arrival in Thailand is meant to be a surprise for Madison, as he wants to make amends. However, he is the one who gets a surprise when he finds CW at the villa, who claims to be Madison’s friend and informs him that Madison is away.

Ryan later speaks with Jessica, who tells him that Madison had said her villa had been broken into.
Jessica finds this suspicious because her room was also broken into around the same time she met CW. Jessica eventually confronts CW about her lies, and things take a deadly turn. CW, not wanting Jessica to ruin her plans, kills her to keep her secret intact.
Ryan Realizes the Truth
Ryan soon figures out that CW has been deceiving him. He notices CW’s birthmark on Madison’s face in the manipulated videos and finds Madison’s diary, which mentions the island where CW took her. Putting everything together, Ryan forces CW to take him to the island, but before he can reach her, she kills him.
Is Madison Dead?
When CW returns to the island with Ryan’s body, it seems like she’s planning to dispose of it and get away with her crimes. However, she is shocked to find no trace of Madison’s body. Madison suddenly appears and attacks CW, revealing that she survived by drinking rainwater and eating fish.
In her weakened state, CW collapses, and Madison seizes the chance to escape, taking the boat and sailing away. As Madison heads into the ocean, CW regains consciousness and watches her leave, smiling.
Why? Perhaps she believes Madison will get lost and never find her way back to the resort, or maybe she’s just amused by Madison’s unexpected victory.
