Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 Ending Explained: How Yuji’s Journey Comes to a Close

Yuji faces Sukuna alone in a final clash that tests every ounce of his strength.

It became increasingly clear by 2024 that Jujutsu Kaisen was approaching its last stretch, and eventually, chapter 271 marked the official end on September 29. Over the past six years, the series made its mark both in manga and anime culture, becoming a major influence within that period.

Even though the final arc had some rough edges, it managed to close things out with a respectable conclusion that many fans could still appreciate.

Once Gojo was freed from the Prison Realm, hopes were high for the heroes to finally gain the upper hand. But the tides quickly changed after Gojo was defeated by Sukuna in battle.

After that, Kenjaku handed over the authority for the Merger to Sukuna just before he was eliminated by Yuta. The remaining part of the story turns into a fierce battle, with Yuji and his allies fighting to stop Sukuna, now in full form. This final act delivered many unexpected moments and kept readers on edge, even though its structure was relatively straightforward.

How Yuji Brought Down The King Of Curses

Sukuna’s Last Stand In Jujutsu Kaisen

When the final clash reached its most intense stage, Yuji ended up being the only one still capable of facing Sukuna. His advantage came from the way his technique, Cleave, could reach into the boundary where Sukuna’s soul merged with Fushiguro’s. This allowed Yuji to attempt to force Sukuna out of Megumi’s body.

He eventually opened his Domain Expansion, dragging Sukuna into a version of his own hometown. There, Yuji reflected on his past life, shared his thoughts about the value of life, and told Sukuna to give up Megumi’s body and return to residing within him if he wished to avoid death. Sukuna, proud as ever, refused, setting the stage for their final one-on-one battle inside the Domain.

As Yuji once more made contact with Megumi’s soul, he told him that it was okay if he wanted to let go, though he admitted he would miss him deeply. That heartfelt moment sparked Megumi into resisting Sukuna once again.

Using Ten Shadows, Megumi caught Sukuna off guard, giving Yuji a better chance to land blows. Although Sukuna managed to recover his cursed powers, he was surprised to see Yuji’s gauntlets concealing the absence of another finger.

Sukuna soon figured out that he had been misled—Yuta didn’t gain access to the Shrine technique by consuming Sukuna’s last finger. Rather, he got it by eating one of Yuji’s fingers. Meanwhile, Sukuna’s real final finger was used as part of Gojo’s last strategy.

Nobara, long unconscious since the Shibuya Incident, targeted that finger using Resonance, damaging Sukuna’s soul and interrupting his Domain abilities. This gave Yuji the edge he needed to strike Sukuna with one more Black Flash—so powerful that it took the light out of Sukuna’s eyes.

By that point, Sukuna had reached his limit. He was removed from Megumi’s body and reduced to a weak, shapeless form. Though it seemed clear that Sukuna wouldn’t survive, Yuji offered him a final opportunity to begin anew by living inside him once again. Sukuna refused with pride and declared himself a curse before taking his last breath. And with that, the long battle finally ended.

Life After The Curtain Closed

Reflections And Quiet Moments At Jujutsu High

Following the defeat of both Sukuna and Kenjaku—and Uraume’s decision to take their own life—Yuji and his companions went back to Jujutsu High to recover. Yuji delivered letters Gojo had written to both Nobara and Megumi before the final showdown.

Nobara’s letter spoke of her mother’s whereabouts, which she wasn’t interested in, while Megumi discovered Gojo was the one responsible for killing his father.

That revelation made Megumi laugh rather than feel resentment. Yuta, on the other hand, successfully returned to his original body. The chapter wrapped up with the group reflecting on whether anything in that final encounter could have gone differently.

As the story continued into chapter 270, various loose ends began to be addressed. Sukuna had previously consumed Tengen, and what remained of Tengen’s body was used to maintain the barrier. After that, Maki instructed Daido and Rokujushi to stay hidden in Tokyo, now marked as a zone filled with high curse activity, as former sorcerers were being hunted.

Amai sought forgiveness from a boy he once bullied, while Megumi shared a sweet moment with Hana. Charles, Higuruma, and Takaba returned to their day jobs, and a surprise twist hinted that Kenjaku may have survived. He even started a comedy act with Takaba.

Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara were soon sent on a new mission involving a curse user causing a woman to view her boyfriend as physically revolting. The mission was wrapped up without much trouble.

After the suspect was caught, Yuji thought back to one of his last talks with Gojo, who had expressed his hope that people would find different ways to solve problems. Yuji took that to heart and encouraged the curse user to change and possibly join their side in the future. That final act of hope marked the close of Yuji’s story in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Sukuna’s Reflections After Death

The Final Word From The King Of Curses

The final chapter offered one more unexpected moment by bringing back both Sukuna and Mahito, now seen in what appeared to be a form of the afterlife. Mahito mentioned that Sukuna’s cruel nature was born out of past suffering, though Sukuna claimed none of that mattered.

Still, he admitted that if he were to live again, he might consider choosing a different path. Mahito called him soft for that thought, but Sukuna didn’t deny it. The final image in the manga showed Sukuna’s last finger inside a shrine—echoing the beginning of the series.

Something was striking about Sukuna maintaining his pride and ideology even at the point of death. But the fact that he recognised Yuji’s approach might have had value gave his character more depth, making him more human than ever.

That moment of introspection even drew a parallel to Gojo’s decision to remain true to himself after death. Though the series wrapped up quickly and left many characters without closure, Sukuna’s ending stood out in its own way.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Final Pages Brought Mixed Reactions

When it comes to endings, Jujutsu Kaisen doesn’t tick every box. Its fast pace left certain parts of the story rushed, and some characters didn’t receive the attention they probably deserved. There was a noticeable lack of emotional depth between several character arcs, and some of the earlier story threads were left unresolved by the time the manga closed.

Even with those complaints, some parts left a lasting impression. Yuji’s story, although not delivered perfectly, still managed to conclude satisfyingly. His decision to face problems differently and break away from the old cycle of curses felt like a genuine resolution.

Though the series may not have received the kind of ending that would please everyone, it still delivered enough for readers to appreciate. Hopefully, the anime and any future content will fill in the gaps and give fans even more reason to return.
