Instead of rehashing what the original film did, Megamind Rules! changes focus to the backstory of the blue-skinned alien, Megamind, by introducing a new antagonist named Machiavillain. This character, who once served as Megamind’s mentor, officially steps into the spotlight after Megamind vs The Doom Syndicate.
His cunning and manipulative nature becomes clearer in Episode 8 of Megamind Rules! Season 1, which marks the showdown between teacher and former student. At the start of the episode, the people of Metro City are shown preparing for Comet Day celebrations.

At the same time, Machiavillain is secretly plotting, using twisted methods to find out Megamind’s true nature. The story also shows Keiko confessing to Chum, the fish inside a mechanical suit, that she handed over Megamind’s cherished binky to Machiavillain.
As the Comet ceremony kicks off, Roxanne introduces Megamind to the crowd, and he shows up as the city’s current hero. Machiavillain uses this moment to step in and provoke Megamind, dragging up the past when he was still in his villain phase.
He tells Megamind that evil cannot truly disappear and puts the idea in his head that he must choose — either return to his old villainous path or continue pretending to be a hero.
Megamind Rules! Ending: How did Megamind rise to the challenge?
Rather than go back to his dark past, Megamind firmly stands by his decision to remain on the side of good. This choice pushes Machiavillain to come up with a twisted competition he titles “Who Wants to Save a City?” In it, Megamind is told that he has just one hour to rescue the city by completing three difficult challenges.
Each challenge comes with a single clue to help him. Machiavillain makes an offer — if Megamind succeeds, he will back off permanently. But failure means Megamind would be forced to destroy Metro City himself.
The clues take him on a tough journey, starting with the first one which directs him to the observatory where the live comet broadcast is taking place. While trying to take down Pier, a hypnotist who is now allied with Machiavillain, Megamind ends up damaging the telescope, causing problems with the live broadcast.
The second clue leads Megamind and his team to the city’s power station. However, his rescue efforts lead to a massive blackout across the entire city.
The third and last battle happens at Megamind’s hideout, where Machiavillain and the remaining Doom Syndicate members succeed in making Megamind misdirect the comet so that it heads straight for Metro City.
Megamind Rules! Ending: Does Megamind save the day?
Eventually, Megamind opens up to Keiko, admitting that he never actually defeated Machiavillain in the past. Although the heroes give their best to rescue the city, things go south. Machiavillain reappears, uses the binky against Megamind, and destroys the comet in full view of the cheering crowd.

To worsen things, Machiavillain plays edited footage of Megamind’s earlier failures at the observatory and power station, painting the actions as deliberate villainy. He twists the story and presents himself as the real hero.
Meanwhile, Keiko also admits she gave the binky to Machiavillain, but Megamind forgives her when he realizes both of them were fooled by the same person. As a result of these events, Roxanne has no choice but to label Megamind as Public Enemy Number 1.
He and his close allies are now fugitives, running from the law, and hoping to track down Metro Man. While Metro Man was an important figure in the first film, he hasn’t made any appearance in Megamind Rules! yet.
But based on how the season ends, there’s a strong suggestion that he will show up soon, and fans may get to watch him and Megamind join forces against the real villain when the second season arrives.
