Bramayugam has impressed movie lovers with Rahul Sadasivan’s remarkable approach to storytelling. The film thrilled audiences through its unconventional storyline and eerie sequences that delivered an intense horror experience.
While Mammootty’s menacing character stood out the most, the performances of Arjun Ashokan and Sidharth Bharathan have also received praise. This horror thriller was entirely filmed in black and white, a creative decision by director Rahul Sadasivan to emphasize its historical setting in the 17th century.

Through this monochrome visual style, Bramayugam effectively brought its horror elements to life, impacting Malayalam cinema. It has earned an impressive IMDb rating of 8.4 out of 10, setting a new benchmark.
With the movie still showing in cinemas, here is a detailed breakdown of its storyline and an explanation of its ending.
How Does Thevan Arrive at the Mysterious Mansion?
Set in 17th-century South Malabar, Bramayugam introduces Arjun Ashokan’s character, Thevan, who has just escaped a life of slavery. Accompanying him is his companion, Koran, who appears to have come from the same background.
As they roam the dense forest searching for a safe place to stay, they decide to rest for the night in the wilderness. However, during the night, Thevan watches as Koran falls under the spell of an enchanting woman who eventually takes his life.
By morning, Thevan, now desperate for food, stumbles upon a grand mansion deep in the forest. As he reaches the entrance, he is received by Mammootty’s Manakkal Kodumon Potti and his cook. At this stage, the film highlights the rigid caste system of that era.
Kodumon Potti, a member of an upper Brahmin caste, allows Thevan, a folk singer from a lower caste, to enter his home despite their differences. After Thevan sings for him, Potti rewards him with a place to stay in the mansion.
While being shown to his room, the cook warns him against wandering around the house after dark. Rather than dismissing the warning, Thevan becomes increasingly curious. That night, an unsettling feeling washes over him as the mansion seems to take on a life of its own.
He hears the sound of chains rattling and senses other unseen presences within the house. When he ventures outside, he makes a chilling discovery—a burial ground right beside the mansion.
Is Thevan Dead or Alive?
Frightened by his discoveries, Thevan makes up his mind to leave the house and return to his mother. However, Kodumon Potti’s strange and unpredictable behavior raises suspicion. When he approaches Potti, he is deceived into playing a game of Pakida, unknowingly gambling away his freedom.

No matter how hard he tries, Thevan finds himself unable to escape. Eventually, he uncovers the truth about the Potti family—the real Kodumon Potti had died long ago. The figure he had been interacting with all along was an evil entity named Chaathan, who had been posing as Potti while ruling over the mansion.
With the cook’s cunning strategies, both he and Thevan work together to expose Chaathan’s true form. As the film progresses, the cook manages to steal the keys to the basement, which contains a sacred chamber and puts out its fire.
However, this leads to the entire mansion catching fire, forcing the cook and Thevan into a desperate struggle for survival. Although viewers are led to believe that the two have successfully vanquished Chaathan, the final revelation takes a darker turn—Chaathan has now taken over Thevan’s identity.
It is also revealed that Thevan perished when the mansion was destroyed. Bramayugam concludes on a haunting note, leaving audiences deeply unsettled. The film’s chilling ending, along with Mammootty’s eerie portrayal of Kodumon Potti, cements its status as a terrifying horror experience.
