Glass Ending Explained: Shyamalan’s Unbreakable Trilogy

Harriet tunes into memories that refuse to fade.

Rather than starting with a new release, attention is once again shifting to some of M. Night Shyamalan’s older works on Netflix, especially his trilogy’s final piece, Glass. This story ties together events from Unbreakable, where Bruce Willis plays David Dunn.

Dunn realizes he cannot be physically harmed and uses this discovery to protect others. Then came Split, where James McAvoy’s character, Kevin Wendell Crumb, lives with multiple personalities, one of which, The Beast, possesses inhuman strength like David.

The last piece of this trilogy, Glass, brings these two men together while also giving more attention to Elijah Price, also known as Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson), who suffers from brittle bones and believes he is a villain with a purpose.

After David and The Beast get into a violent encounter, both of them end up at a mental hospital where Dr. Ellie Staple, a psychiatrist, is trying to convince them—and Elijah—that their powers are not real but imagined.

As the three men undergo evaluation, their families and close allies refuse to accept this explanation and begin to search for the truth behind their abilities. What looks like a bleak ending at first gradually reveals a spark of hope that sets a new course for future possibilities.

Three Lives Connected to the Superhumans Find Their Truth

Instead of being sidelined, those who are close to David, Kevin, and Elijah take on roles of their own during the events of Glass. David’s son Joseph (Spencer Treat Clark), who already knows about his father’s gifts from Unbreakable, stays by his side.

Casey Cooke (Anya Taylor-Joy), who survived a terrifying experience with The Beast in Split, now finds herself feeling sympathy for Kevin. Elijah’s mother, Mrs. Price (Charlayne Woodard), has always done her best to protect her son.

These three are later brought into the hospital and questioned by Dr. Staple, who tries to persuade them that their loved ones are dealing with mental illness rather than reality. Refusing to accept this, they begin looking for clues in comic book shops.

Through reading, they discover how much these stories mirror the lives of David, Kevin, and Elijah. It becomes clear to them that the comics reflect more than fantasy—they tell real stories of people like their loved ones who walk among us.

Mr. Glass Plans His Revenge with The Horde’s Help

Though Dr. Staple’s psychological efforts plant some doubt in David and Kevin, particularly within the group of violent personalities in Kevin called The Horde, she fails to sway Elijah. Pretending to be non-responsive for a long time, Elijah is only waiting for the right moment to act.

He refuses to let skeptics like Dr. Staple silence people like him anymore. Mr. Glass wants the truth about people with abilities to be seen by all, and he believes staging a fight between David and The Beast is the way to do it. Coincidentally, a new skyscraper is about to open in the city—an ideal spot for such a display.

Mr. Glass easily gains The Horde’s trust, and together they begin their escape with one goal in mind: public proof.

A Fierce Confrontation Brings Everyone to the Hospital Grounds

Rather than taking the fight to the newly opened building, the final battle takes place right outside the hospital. The Beast lets loose on the facility’s staff, as Joseph, Casey, Mrs. Price, and Mr. Glass watch from nearby. David soon joins the fray, determined to stop both Elijah and The Beast.

As the two powerful figures clash, their supporters search desperately for a way to prevent more harm.

Shyamalan’s Trademark Twist Delivers a Painful Blow

An unexpected turn comes through Joseph, who uncovers something heartbreaking during his investigation. It turns out that Kevin’s father, Clarence Crumb (Bryan McElroy), died in the same train crash that started this entire chain of events in Unbreakable.

He had been looking for help for Kevin’s condition when he boarded that ill-fated train, making Mr. Glass directly responsible for his death. This revelation enrages The Beast, who attacks and fatally wounds Mr. Glass.

Even after this shocking moment, David and The Beast continue their brutal confrontation. Their battle spills into a water tank—David’s biggest weakness. Though he breaks free, he is drained of strength. Casey then reaches Kevin and can bring him back for a brief moment, calming The Beast.

But before relief sets in, Kevin is gunned down, and David is forced underwater by a silent agent bearing a tattoo of a clover on his wrist.

Dr. Staple’s True Mission Is Tied to a Secret Group Called Clover

The full extent of Dr. Staple’s agenda is revealed when her clover tattoo is shown. She was never interested in helping people understand they weren’t special. Her task was to manipulate those with powers into thinking they were ordinary.

The group she works for—Clover—operates in secret and tries to prevent knowledge of such individuals from spreading. They prefer to use psychological methods to convince their subjects to live quietly without revealing themselves.

When those approaches fail, they resort to more final methods—death. This is the brutal end David, Kevin, and Elijah meet, not because they were a threat to society, but because they refused to accept the lie.

Mr. Glass Leaves Behind a Message That Changes Everything

Though the three central characters lose their lives, Mr. Glass leaves behind one final move that outlives him. Instead of trying to escape, his real mission was to record the extraordinary acts of David and Kevin using the hospital’s cameras. He had arranged for the footage to be saved to a private server without anyone knowing.

That recording ends up with Mrs. Price, Casey, and Joseph. They agree to release the footage online and meet later at a train station, hoping their actions spark awareness. At first, the response seems slow, but soon people nearby begin watching the videos on their phones, showing clear amazement at what they’re seeing.

Their loved ones may be gone, but through this revelation, their abilities—and the truth—will continue to live on.
