The movie begins with an advertisement from the United Citizen Federation, offering citizenship to those who serve in the military. The Federation constantly needs soldiers to fight in the ongoing war against the Bugs.
These massive alien creatures from various planets have targeted Earth, and the war has been going on for years in the 23rd century. While humans have managed to win some battles, the Bugs have also mounted some clever attacks, leading to heavy casualties.

The audience is introduced to Johnny, a student who struggles in class, unlike his friend Carmen, who excels. Johnny has deep feelings for Carmen, but she is determined to pursue her dream of becoming a pilot. Coming from a wealthy family, Johnny’s father is furious when he learns Johnny has decided to join the Federation.
Dizzy, who has feelings for Johnny, faces a challenge as Carmen seems more interested in Zander, a Federation pilot. Meanwhile, Carl, a mind reader, tries to teach Johnny how to understand others’ thoughts, but Johnny is not quite good at it.
Despite these distractions, the group moves ahead, preparing for the uncertain journey that lies ahead.
Why does Johnny sign up for Mobile Infantry?
Professor Rasczack once pointed out the distinction between a citizen and a civilian, but Johnny didn’t grasp its meaning at that time. All he cared about was being close to Carmen.
His possessiveness grows when he sees Carmen talking to Zander, but Johnny soon realizes that to be with her, he must join the Mobile Infantry. Carmen’s goal of becoming a pilot means Johnny risks losing her if he stays behind. His desire to stay close to her drives him to join the Infantry, despite his parents’ objections.
Johnny joins the Mobile Infantry, while Carmen goes for the pilot position. Their friend Carl decides to pursue a career in Military Intelligence, and Dizzy, who harbors feelings for Johnny, joins his team.
Unfortunately, Carmen and Johnny break up as their careers take them in different directions, and she develops an interest in her co-pilot, Zander. This leaves Johnny devastated, and things begin to fall apart.
Despite the challenges, Johnny performs well in training, impressing Sergeant Zim and earning a promotion to squadron leader. As Johnny learns the ropes, he makes new friends while keeping his distance from Dizzy.
Why does Johnny leave and then return to Mobile Infantry?
During a training exercise, Johnny makes a mistake that results in the death of a fellow soldier. This leads to his demotion and punishment, causing Johnny to leave the unit and return home. However, upon learning that the Bugs have destroyed Buenos Aires, where his parents lived, Johnny changes his mind.
He approaches his commanding officer, expressing his desire to return and fight. Sergeant Zim, after seeing Johnny’s determination, tears up the paperwork that would have allowed him to leave, permitting him to rejoin the fight.
Johnny, along with Dizzy and Levy, is sent to Klendathu, the home planet of the Bugs. Eager for battle, they underestimate the Bugs’ strategy, assuming they would not put up much of a fight. This results in heavy casualties, and Johnny is injured.
Just as a Bug is about to finish him off, Lieutenant Rasczak arrives to save him. News of Johnny’s supposed death spreads across the Federation, upsetting Carmen. However, Johnny survives and begins to form a bond with Dizzy, as romance begins to blossom between them.
How does Lieutenant Rasczak die?
Once recovered, Johnny, Dizzy, and Levy join Lieutenant Rasczak’s elite squad, the Rasczak’s Roughnecks. Johnny proves his worth when he single-handedly kills a massive Tanker Bug on Tango Urilla, earning a promotion to Corporal.
As time goes on, Johnny and Dizzy grow closer, especially after Rasczack advises Johnny to hold onto the good things in life while they last. Their relationship begins to resemble that of a father and son, with both feeling comfortable expressing this bond.
The Roughnecks respond to a distress signal from Planet P, only to find an abandoned outpost. They meet a General who is fearful, knowing there is no way out. Shortly after, they are ambushed by the Bugs. In an attempt to rescue the soldiers, Carmen and Zander are sent to a dropship.
Before they can rescue everyone, Dizzy is severely wounded. Meanwhile, Rasczak is brutally injured by a Bug, leaving him in agony. Johnny, witnessing this, becomes frantic, unsure of how to proceed. Ultimately, Johnny takes the painful decision to end Rasczak’s suffering, shooting him before boarding the ship.
Carmen learns that Johnny is still alive, but Dizzy has passed away. The survivors return to their station and hold a ceremony to honor Dizzy.
What is Carl’s Plan to Win the War Against the Bugs?
Now a high-ranking colonel, Carl attends Dizzy’s funeral and reveals shocking news to Johnny and the rest of the team. Carl explains that the Roughnecks were intentionally led into the trap to confirm the existence of a highly strategic Bug known as the Brain Bug.
Carmen is enraged, blaming Carl for sacrificing their comrades’ lives. Had it not been for Carl’s plan, Dizzy might still be alive. But Carl remains unmoved, focused solely on winning the war against the Bugs. Johnny realizes that, although Carl’s actions seem selfish, they may be necessary for the war effort.
In a surprising turn, Carl promotes Johnny to lieutenant and entrusts him with the task of leading the Roughnecks on a mission to capture the Brain Bug. This mission is crucial for gaining intelligence that will help them defeat the Bugs once and for all.
Johnny understands the importance of the mission, especially after the heavy losses he has suffered, and prepares to face Planet P with unwavering determination.

Does Johnny capture the Brain Bug?
As the team advances on Planet P, Carmen and Zander’s spacecraft is struck by a barrage of Bugs’ fire. Most of the crew perish, though Carmen and Zander manage to escape in a shuttle. Unfortunately, their shuttle crashes in a cave, and they are surrounded by Bugs.
Carmen tries to contact Johnny, who orders a search party to be sent out. However, the situation is dire, and Johnny realizes there is no hope for them, so he focuses on his mission to find the Brain Bug. The Bugs have different plans for Carmen and Zander, torturing them instead of killing them immediately.
The Brain Bug is revealed, using its trunk to extract Zander’s knowledge before killing him. Johnny and his squad continue their mission, determined to locate Carmen and Zander, though Johnny senses that Carmen might still be alive.
As they confront the Bugs, the Brain Bug hides within a cave, aware of the danger. The Bugs attack Johnny, Carmen, and the others, critically injuring Watkins. But Watkins makes a final sacrifice, setting off a small nuclear device to allow the others to escape.
The explosion wipes out most of the Bugs in the cave, pushing the squad closer to victory. Soon after, Johnny learns that Sergeant Zim has captured the Brain Bug. Carl, using his psychic abilities, detects the fear in the Bug, signaling a major shift in the battle.
The Federation celebrates, realizing that the Brain Bug now fears them. The movie ends with another broadcast from the Federation, showing Carl’s team studying the Brain Bug and the promise of a future victory.
Carmen, now a commanding officer, and Johnny, leading his squad, prepare for the next battle against the Bugs.
