Too Good to Be True Ending Explained: Buried Truths and Lasting Shadows

A past rewritten by a single truth.

Elliot was just a child, the same age as Liam, when his mother lost her life in a house fire—a tragedy he had always blamed on his father. Eventually, his father was convicted, even though he continuously denied any wrongdoing.

However, the final revelation turned everything on its head. By the time his father arrived home that dreadful day, the fire had already consumed the house, and Elliot himself was the one who had ignited the flames. Though his father’s actions had fostered a toxic environment, the responsibility for the fire lay elsewhere.

In a bid to break free from her abusive alcoholic husband, Elliot’s mother had made the painful decision to move back to Ireland and rebuild her life—but she planned to do so without taking her son along. The news left him heartbroken, a reaction any child would have in such circumstances.

But instead of accepting it, he took extreme measures to stop her from leaving.

A Troubled Past and Unresolved Trauma

After the fire, Elliot started therapy sessions with psychologist Debra Mallon. Over time, he confided in her and built a deep sense of trust. That trust, however, quickly spiraled into an unhealthy obsession, leading to abusive behavior when she attempted to reschedule an appointment.

Whenever Debra tried to place him with a foster family, he would flee, showing up unannounced at her doorstep in the dead of night. Fearing for her well-being, she eventually severed all ties with him and even refused to testify in his case—something that only worsened his issues.

Rachel and Liam became his chance to create the stable, loving family life he had never experienced. He had attempted the same with his ex-wife Olivia, but his possessive and violent nature had destroyed that relationship. At first, it seemed like his plan with Rachel was working.

As his assistant, Simone began uncovering unsettling truths, and Rachel started doubting him, she realized they had no future together and resolved to walk away from his life. But Elliot was already ahead of her.

Without her knowledge, he picked Liam up from school and tricked her into coming to his isolated countryside cottage, where both mother and son were completely at his mercy. In a desperate attempt to de-escalate the situation, Rachel tried convincing Elliot that they could work things out and build a life together.

For a brief moment, it seemed like she had succeeded in calming him down. But when she lunged for a knife, he quickly knocked it out of her grasp and wrapped his hands around her throat, cutting off her air. Just in time, Liam arrived and struck him with a tool from the garage.

Seizing the opportunity, Rachel and Liam made a run for it, but Elliot, who had appeared unconscious, suddenly sprang to life and gave chase.

A Chilling Final Twist

With no way to escape by car, Rachel knew they had only one option—to confront him head-on. She grabbed a blowtorch and turned it on him. The aftermath of the attack wasn’t shown, but it was clear that Elliot was gone for good, allowing Rachel and Liam to reclaim their lives.

Yet, things were far from being at peace. While keeping them captive in the cottage, Elliot had exposed a painful secret to Liam. When Rachel had him as a young mother, she struggled with her mental health and felt incapable of raising him, leading her to place him in the care system.

The revelation left Liam deeply shaken. Rachel later reassured him that she had recovered far quicker than she had expected and had taken him back into her care, where he had remained ever since.

Still, even after her heartfelt explanation, Elliot’s words continued to linger in Liam’s mind as the drama reached its final moments. “I know what that feels like, Liam, not to be wanted. You can’t trust her, but you can trust me because we’re the same, me and you.”

Breaking the fourth wall, Liam’s expression turned cold before the screen faded to black. Elliot may no longer be present, but his influence lingers on. Watch Too Good to Be True on Amazon Prime.
