1923 Season 2 Ending Explained: Spencer and Alex’s Journey, the Duttons’ Final Stand, and What Comes Next in the Yellowstone Saga

The Dutton saga meets a fiery farewell in 1923.

The final episode of 1923 has arrived on Paramount+, ending the second season and bringing the entire series to a halt. This conclusion wraps up another episode in Taylor Sheridan’s expanding Yellowstone creation, and it has been especially intense.

This makes it the second show within the Yellowstone timeline to end in recent months, since the original series had its conclusion back in December. The second-to-the-last episode was filled with brutal violence, paving the way for a tense climax as the Montana storyline finally reached its peak.

So, how did everything come to a head?

1923 ending explained

Now that everything has come down to the Dutton residence, let’s take a detailed look at how the 1923 season two finished and what this might mean for the larger Yellowstone tale.

Alex and Spencer reunite

Back in episode six, two British characters who were helping froze to death, leaving Alex stuck inside the car, now fighting for her own life in the harsh cold. She starts burning whatever she can lay her hands on to stay warm, even setting the car itself on fire.

As fate would have it, a train happens to pass by, and Spencer is on board since they had been heading in the same direction. He sees her from the train and wastes no time jumping off to reach her. When they finally meet again, they embrace, and Alex informs Spencer that she’s pregnant – and has been for the past six months.

The train stops and picks them up, and Alex is taken to a doctor. The medical team tries to stabilize her worn-out body and reverse the damage. As Spencer watches, the doctor removes her clothes and reveals how much the frostbite has ravaged her limbs, turning large portions of her body necrotic.

Luckily, the train isn’t far from Livingston. But even reaching there doesn’t mean they’re out of danger yet.

The Livingston shootout

At the Livingston station, Jacob Dutton and his men, along with Sheriff McDowell, wait armed for Spencer’s arrival. But there’s more to the situation. Donald Whitfield’s group also learns that Spencer is coming, and they’ve made up their minds that he won’t leave the station alive.

They gather in large numbers, fully prepared to kill him – and anyone else who might stand in their way. Banner is present with his family, but his mind isn’t on violence anymore. He’s made up his mind to leave Whitfield’s camp and escape with his loved ones to Portland.

The train finally arrives. But before Spencer can even get down, gunfire breaks out immediately. The entire place becomes a war zone, with hardly anyone making it out unscathed. Whitfield’s men are taken down one after the other. Even Banner takes a bullet as he defends Jacob in a moment of courage.

Eventually, Spencer manages to leave the train and briefly reconnects with his uncle Jacob, who is already bleeding. Then he sets out for the Dutton ranch. Alex, on her part, continues her journey through Livingston, heading to the hospital in Boseman. Jacob, though wounded, goes with her.

The Dutton house under siege

Cowboys loyal to the Duttons waste no time speeding from the station to their ranch, knowing fully well that Whitfield’s men would also attempt to attack the family home. And they are right. The house has already been under attack for hours.

Cara positions herself upstairs with a rifle, picking off intruders with precise shots. On ground level, Zane takes charge of the defence as the house remains surrounded by more of Whitfield’s men. Together, Cara and Zane manage to hold them off through most of the day. But by nightfall, the attackers break into the house.

Not long after, Spencer arrives and clears a path through Whitfield’s thugs. He eliminates them one after the other with deadly skill, showing exactly why Jacob and Cara had longed for his return.

The sound of gunshots fades away, and peace slowly returns to the house. Spencer sees Cara again – who, it must be said, proves to be an expert sniper – and inside the house, Liz cries out for Jack. Jack had earlier left the house to assist at the train station, and Spencer was supposed to return with him.

But he never got there. In the previous episode, he had been ambushed and killed on the way. Cara, who already knew what had happened, sends out a team to search the area. They later recover Jack’s body in the woods.

Tragedy at Boseman Hospital

While Spencer was caught up in the gunfight, Alex and Jacob managed to reach the hospital in Boseman. Jacob’s bleeding wasn’t from a new wound but rather an old one that reopened. He quickly begins searching for Alex and finds her in labour.

She goes on to give birth to a baby boy, though the child comes prematurely. Against the odds, the baby is strong enough to survive. The baby turns out to be John Dutton Jr – the father of Yellowstone’s John Dutton. That makes Spencer and Alex the boys’ grandparents.

But while the baby makes it, Alex doesn’t have the strength left to pull through. She finally reunites with Spencer, but her body has already been pushed to its breaking point. She refuses surgery – the doctors want to amputate her dead limbs – and instead chooses to hold her baby and meet her end peacefully.

Spencer arrives and lies by her side. When morning comes, she’s gone. Yes, after everything they’ve been through, Alex passes away in the final moments of 1923. Her journey has been one filled with suffering, and this brutal ending continues the harsh tone Sheridan is known for.

He seems to hold the belief that life isn’t fair, and in his world, happy endings are rarely handed out. Alex’s story proves that once again.

Jacob and Spencer get their revenge

After losing Alex, Spencer hands his baby over to Cara for care. He and Jacob then set out to get justice against Whitfield. Together, they storm into Whitfield’s home. They find him calmly eating breakfast, but Spencer doesn’t hesitate – he shoots Whitfield in the head right there.

Jacob explains that Whitfield’s death should serve as a message to greedy businessmen looking to steal the Duttons’ land.

1923’s closing moments

Once the fighting ends, Liz decides to leave the ranch to rebuild her life elsewhere. Her time there has been nothing short of traumatic. Her decision draws a connection to Alex, who also went through deep sorrow since linking up with the Duttons, but still endured everything until her final breath.

Jack and Alex are buried in the family graveyard. After that, Spencer begins managing the ranch himself. This gives Jacob a chance to step back from leadership, finally entering retirement. He and Cara take responsibility for raising Spencer’s son.

As for Teonah, after killing the priest, she’s eventually caught by Marshall Fossett. She’s taken to court, but since no one is willing to testify against her, the charges are dropped. She gains her freedom and sets her sights on California, hoping to start afresh and leave behind the pain she’s known for the past year.

Elsa Dutton takes over the narration at this point, speaking on how Spencer eventually dies peacefully in old age. Through it all, his memories of Alex never fade. The very last shot shows Spencer and Alex, in one of his memories, dancing at a ball – together again in death.

Where does the Yellowstone story go after 1923?

The conclusion of 1923 is final. There won’t be another season. Just like 1883 and the original Yellowstone, this chapter is now complete. Even though this part of the Yellowstone series is finished, the larger story is still ongoing.

1883 led into 1923, and now 1944 is said to be in the pipeline, with Sheridan expected to develop it. That series might cover the lives of a much older Spencer and his son, John Dutton Jr. Apart from that, several follow-up projects that focus on events after Yellowstone are being planned.

Titles like The Madison, 6666, a show based on Beth and Rip, and another centred on Kayce are all in different development stages. Though 1923 is now behind us, many more stories are still being prepared.

Hopefully, at least one of these upcoming series will bring us new characters just as compelling as Jacob, Cara, Spencer, and Alex, and offer storylines that match the intensity of what came before.
