Jared’s journey into the supernatural world starts when he uncovers the truth about it, realizing the importance of gaining his family’s trust, as well as trusting himself. One of the driving forces behind the Grace family’s move to Henson was Helen’s search for help regarding Jared’s mental health and erratic behavior.
But despite the strange, magical creatures that Jared and his family encounter, they remain skeptical of his claims. Throughout the season, Simon and Mallory are not convinced by Jared’s stories of the supernatural and even have Helen questioning his honesty.

However, it is Jared’s great-aunt Lucinda who shows the most belief in him, giving him the task of finding the pages of Arthur Spiderwick’s field guide to prevent Mulgarath’s plan, along with a portable seeing stone that allows the user to see the true form of magical creatures.
Jared’s cautious approach to the magical world stems from the feelings of rejection and self-hatred that he has endured from his family, except for Simon, his brother. Simon, on the other hand, learns to trust in his judgment despite others’ doubts.
The series introduces Simon as the “good” twin, excelling in school, agreeable, and dependable. However, once he sees proof of the supernatural, Simon begins to search for the good in the creatures, as shown in his interactions with Thimbletack, the boggart, and Calliope, the fetch.
After learning about Jared’s impending death, Simon reluctantly allies with Mulgarath, much to the dismay of his family, to prevent this dark future.
While Simon’s actions go against his usual nature, he understands that these decisions might be the only way to keep his family together, even though Mallory initially plans to leave them behind. Mallory’s strained relationship with her brothers reveals the reasons behind her obsession with fencing and her search for her purpose.
Moving to Henson, Mallory faces difficulties in making new friends and focuses more on her fencing aspirations, hoping it will earn her a scholarship. In her training sessions with Valentina and her growing friendship with Bree, Mallory discovers Valentina’s fairy heritage and her mission to teach humans how to wield the vorpal sword to defeat Mulgarath.
As Mallory reflects on her motivation for fencing, she realizes that her desire to outshine her brothers stems from a moment when Jared’s outburst prevented her parents from attending one of her matches. After Bree acquires the vorpal sword, she proves to be the only one with the “pure intent” to wield it.
It is Mallory’s newfound self-awareness and her strengthened bond with Bree that help her confront Mulgarath alongside her family.
The Graces Unite Against Mulgarath in ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’ Season Finale
The Grace family comes together after a period of division in the season finale. Jared, having acquired the vorpal sword, is taken by Mulgarath to the Meskwaki Psychiatric Hospital, where the ogre assumes the role of Jared’s therapist, Dr. Dorian Bauer.
Mulgarath steals one of Spiderwick’s field guide pages on dragons and begins his plot to seize control of Henson. Mallory, with the help of Thimbletack, frees Jared and joins Simon, Bree, and Hatcher in a mission to stop Mulgarath. Simon manages to find a cure for the sleeping sickness that has taken over the town.
In their final attempt to save their mother and destroy Mulgarath, the Grace siblings use the vorpal sword. Jared gets captured once again, but with Helen’s help, they make a tea that renders them invisible for just enough time to avoid Mulgarath’s detection.
Simon convinces Calliope to aid him in contacting the sprites, so they can distribute the sleeping sickness cure to everyone in town. Mallory and Bree struggle during their fight against Mulgarath, and in a desperate move, Jared, Helen, and Thimbletack summon a troll to assist them.
With the town cured and Mulgarath seemingly defeated, a dragon hatches, suggesting the ogre’s plans are far from over.
Mulgarath’s Last Malicious Manipulation Against the Graces
The family faces a moral dilemma when they are confronted with a baby dragon, and Jared insists on killing it. However, his family is hesitant, leading to a moment of reconciliation where they acknowledge how often they have disregarded Jared’s feelings, which has left him feeling unworthy.

Mallory helps Jared realize his worth when he briefly possesses the vorpal sword, a weapon that only works for those with selfless intentions. Mulgarath, disguised as Jared, manipulates the family by using his knowledge of Jared, gained during their therapy sessions.
He deceives them into believing that iron does not harm him as it does other magical creatures. The family falls for this ruse, and Mallory mistakenly stabs the real Jared with the vorpal sword, causing him to vanish. Jared finds himself in a dreamlike forest where he meets Arthur Spiderwick.
The season concludes with Mulgarath finding a new way to infiltrate the Grace family and further his destructive agenda.
Now in Jared’s form and with the newly hatched dragon, Mulgarath continues his pursuit of Spiderwick’s field guide pages, planning to execute his plot to consume the people of Henson and conquer the world.
As Jared converses with Arthur Spiderwick, he may be given a new mission, gain fresh insights into the magical world, and discover more ways to stop Mulgarath.
