The final episode of White Lies turns everything we thought we knew upside down. Right from the beginning, the focus had been on uncovering who was behind the killing of Andrew McKenzie, a wealthy man in the construction sector, and his wife, Olivia.
The investigation brought together Edie, who is Andrew’s sister and a reporter, and a detective named Forty Bell, as they both worked to get to the bottom of the case. From earlier episodes, we already know Morgan Witbooi—the security guard from Bishopscourt—is the one who shot Andrew.

What came as a surprise was the reason: Andrew, burdened by heavy debts and the shame that would come with public bankruptcy, paid Morgan to kill him. Andrew had fallen out with people from the black community who had become homeless because of a housing project linked to his company.
Even though he had spoken against the project, they now turned against him, and the pressure was too much. He believed that dying would be easier than facing disgrace. As for Olivia, she was in a coma, and by the time Daniel and Jamie went to see her at the hospital, she had lost her life that same day.
Was their visit just a coincidence or part of something more serious? Episode eight reveals the answer.
What Happened To Morgan?
Morgan ended his own life after confessing to Edie that he had shot Andrew. Before then, he had plans to kill Edie. However, once Edie told him she was pregnant, his heart softened, and he could no longer go through with it. What he said before pulling the trigger might make you look at him differently.
Morgan explained that he didn’t believe it was right to bring a child into a world so full of exploitation, where people like Andrew used the suffering of the poor to their advantage. Andrew had pressured him, a poor black man living in desperation, to take his life in return for money.
Morgan knew that no one, especially the police, would believe his side of the story. The scene of the murder made it look like a robbery, and the truth of what happened would be difficult to prove, especially when a rich white man’s story would be more easily accepted than his.
Edie tried to reason with him, to give him hope, to make him believe that things could still change for the better. But Morgan, fully aware that Edie’s privileged background couldn’t let her truly feel his pain, didn’t believe she could understand what he was going through.
He felt that ending his life was the only way out. And so, right in front of her, he shot himself in the head.
What Did Edie Find Out When She Went To See Daniel And Jamie?
Edie and Daniel had a deep connection—and it wasn’t just because she was his aunt. The truth was that Edie was his birth mother. She gave birth to him at 16, but Andrew and Olivia took him away, deciding they could give him a better future. They also didn’t want Edie to have any part in Daniel’s life.
But once Edie reappeared, she developed a strong emotional link with him and felt a need to shield him from harm. She also grew determined to find out what happened to Olivia. Edie couldn’t stop thinking—was Daniel involved? It wasn’t a baseless worry.
Daniel had always looked up to Andrew, desperate for his approval. He had even applied for an African Oxford scholarship to walk in Andrew’s footsteps. Yet, Edie had noticed that Daniel often struggled with controlling his anger.
When she brought the topic up with Jamie, she realized that Jamie seemed very protective of Daniel, almost like a parental figure. This troubled Edie, and she took her concerns to Forty Bell. She suspected that Daniel might have lashed out at Olivia after learning she had cheated on Andrew.
But Forty clarified that whoever attacked Olivia had to be left-handed because of the injury’s location on her head, and Daniel wasn’t left-handed. Feeling some relief, Edie visited Daniel’s house to tell him the police weren’t going to keep chasing the case.
What she saw next, though, shook her to her core. She saw Daniel and Jamie by the poolside, behaving romantically. Jamie wasn’t just protective—she was in a romantic relationship with Daniel, and she kept everyone else away from him.
Edie was in disbelief. She didn’t say a word and quietly left, carrying that disturbing revelation alone.
Why Did Forty Arrest Hofmeyr?
Andrew had a business partner named Hofmeyr who ended up behind bars for his involvement in shady dealings tied to their construction firm. Hofmeyr kept a friendly face with Andrew’s family and even arranged a memorial after Andrew died.
But behind the scenes, his actions said something different. When Edie turned to him for financial help concerning Daniel, Hofmeyr only agreed on the condition that Edie would co-sign some documents related to an upcoming construction plan.
Edie became suspicious when she realised Andrew never signed those documents, prompting her to dig deeper. That investigation revealed that their firm had forcefully displaced a black community to make way for a fancy hotel, causing serious problems for those pushed out.
Andrew had been planning to come clean and expose Hofmeyr, but his life was cut short two days before he could do that. Unknown to Hofmeyr, Forty Bell secretly recorded him admitting that he had paid bribes to secure government contracts.
That confession sealed Hofmeyr’s fate, and he was taken into custody under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act of 2004.
Who Killed Olivia?
When the truth about Olivia’s death comes to light, it takes everyone by surprise. Edie put the pieces together and discovered that Jamie was the one who had harmed Olivia. Her suspicion grew after recognising that Jamie had a romantic bond with her brother Daniel, and the attacker was left-handed.
During a stage play where Daniel took on the role of Gatsby and Jamie played Daisy, Jamie threw something to Edie, and Edie caught it with her left hand. That moment confirmed Edie’s doubts—Jamie was left-handed and had the motive.

Olivia had uncovered the incestuous relationship between Daniel and Jamie and wanted to separate them. She tried sending Jamie away, but Jamie refused to go. Jamie had already shown signs of extreme jealousy in the past—she had a history of hurting people who got too close to Daniel.
The final confrontation between Olivia and the two siblings ended badly. While Olivia was mourning Andrew’s body, Jamie came from behind and struck her on the head, which left Olivia in a coma and eventually led to her death.
Even when Edie confronted them, they tried to twist her arm emotionally. They begged her to stay quiet about not only the murder but also their relationship. They even threatened to cut her off completely. Edie decided she would do what was right for the children and reported Jamie to the police, which led to Jamie getting arrested.
As for what will become of Edie and Daniel’s relationship, there is a faint hope that he might step away from the disturbing relationship he had with Jamie and begin to rebuild his life with Edie’s support. But that hope might not be realistic.
Daniel still has deep-seated anger problems, a twisted sense of loyalty, and involvement in drug-related activities. He may choose to push Edie away completely because of Jamie’s arrest.
Perhaps now, with another child on the way, Edie will choose a different path—one that helps her become the kind of mother she wasn’t able to be for Daniel. Maybe this time, she will get it right.
