Rather than a smooth ride, the season 5 finale of Young Sheldon presents the Coopers with a mix of personal and family issues. CBS brings the fifth season to a close with “A Clogged Pore, a Little Spanish and the Future,” marking the first time the show completed a full 22-episode season since the pandemic started in 2020.
This episode gently prepares the way for season 6, suggesting that the tone of the show will take a more serious turn. This time around, CBS adjusted its approach by broadening the focus beyond just Sheldon. The early part of season 5 dealt with George’s near infidelity involving Brenda Sparks.

Which was hinted at in the previous season’s finale. Eventually, Mary also found herself pulled toward a potential affair with Pastor Rob. Sheldon had a short reunion with Paige and decided engineering wasn’t for him, while Missy experienced issues at school.
But since the reveal that Georgie got Mandy pregnant, the family’s attention has mostly been centered on that.
The Coopers Try To Adjust To A New Reality
As season 5 ends, the Coopers begin coming to terms with the idea that a baby will soon join their household. Even with this acceptance, each of them is confronted by fresh issues that test their resilience. While some of these matters are dealt with, others still hang in the air waiting to be resolved.
George’s Career Hits A Wall In A Way That Resembles His Big Bang Theory Persona
George’s teaching job at Medford High has been hanging by a thread for a while, and in the finale, the inevitable happens. Rather than waiting to be fired, he chooses to resign before the school year ends, trying to preserve his pride.
But this leaves the family in a tighter financial bind, especially since Mary had already lost her position at the church. Even though she manages to secure a job opportunity for both of them at a grocery store, George turns it down, saying it’s beneath him.
Instead of seeking a way forward, he stays home, gets irritable, and wastes time watching television, only working a shift at Ballard that doesn’t bring in enough money.
This portrayal lines up with the version of George often mentioned in The Big Bang Theory, and considering the tough times ahead, his behaviour may get worse.
Mary Turns To Brenda For Work, Hinting At Complications Ahead
After being dismissed by Pastor Jeff, Mary is forced to urgently look for another job since George is also now unemployed. She soon finds out that job opportunities are limited and competitive, leading her to ask Brenda for work at the bowling alley.
Though hesitant at first due to her complicated history with George, Brenda eventually agrees after Mary practically pleads. Mary sees this as a small victory, but she might not fully understand what she’s getting involved in.
With the lingering tension between Brenda and George still unresolved, there’s a strong chance season 6 will revisit that connection.
Meemaw And Georgie’s Mexico Trip Has Serious Consequences
Meemaw and Georgie take a risky trip to Mexico in the finale, aiming to purchase cheap cigarettes for their gambling venture. Things don’t go as planned, as both of them end up getting arrested. It’s not immediately clear whether they’re being held in the U.S. or Mexico, or what exact charges they face.
Though the situation is presented with humour — including Meemaw’s phone call to George for help — the arrest could be far more damaging than it appears. With the family’s financial issues, raising bail might be a struggle.
Even with Meemaw’s business doing well, this incident could wipe out her savings. Also, Georgie now has an arrest on his record, which could ruin his relationship with Mandy if she finds out.
Missy’s Steady Presence Contrasts Her Disappointing Future
Missy shows emotional depth again in this episode, just as she has during Georgie’s challenges throughout the season. She gives both Mary and Georgie solid emotional backing, and now does the same for Sheldon as he grows anxious about puberty and what lies ahead.
While his parents argue constantly, Missy is the only one who manages to calm him. It’s clear she’s the most emotionally grounded among the Cooper children, which makes her future in The Big Bang Theory even more confusing.
Compared to her brothers, she seems to have had less traditional success, even though she had qualities that should’ve taken her far.
Sheldon Wears His First Flash Shirt As A Nod To Fans
At the close of the season, Sheldon appears to gain some confidence thanks to Missy’s encouragement. He shows this through his outfit — ditching the usual polo and bow tie for a Flash T-shirt, similar to what he wears in The Big Bang Theory.

Fans of the original series may see this as a meaningful reference. But according to Young Sheldon producer Steven Molaro, this doesn’t mean Sheldon is leaving behind his usual dress style completely.
Season 5’s Ending Hints At A More Mature Season 6
Rather than relying on major surprises or emotional cliffhangers, the season finale of Young Sheldon takes a quieter approach. That decision fits the overall mood of recent episodes, which have already been packed with tension for the Coopers.
The episode “A Clogged Pore, a Little Spanish and the Future” mostly acts as a bridge to what’s ahead. Mary and George’s marriage is on shaky ground, and they’re now also dealing with money troubles. Pastor Rob may be out of the picture, but Brenda’s reappearance could add to George’s issues.
The finale also reflects the reality that Sheldon and his siblings are getting older, which forces the show to speed up its timeline. As a result, season 6 is likely to offer more serious and mature storylines, shifting the show into a deeper kind of family drama than it started as.
