When Marie and Marcus disturb the frozen ground with their drilling, they awaken something terrifying and unnatural hidden beneath the snow. This leads to a gruesome attack that leaves Marcus mutilated and Marie barely alive.
Covered in blood and unable to speak from shock, she’s eventually located by Luke and Sebastian, who try to comfort her and make sense of what just happened.
Her panic is clear as she pleads with them to leave the area immediately. As they wait for Marie to regain her composure, Luc shares that he found Marcus’ body without the head and suspects foul play.

William initially thinks a wild animal might be behind it, but Luc strongly disagrees, insisting it was no creature of the wild. Suspicion quickly turns to Marie, especially from Luc, who starts to believe she might have had a hand in Marcus’ death.
Why does Sebastian step out of the base?
Sebastian, deeply affected by the shocking events, struggles to process the horror they encountered. Unlike Luc, he refuses to believe Marie could have harmed Marcus and stands by her innocence. Sitting quietly beside her, he reflects on their time at the base, remembering how they communicated despite the language barrier, as she never spoke English.
He eventually chooses to head out and recover Marcus’ body himself. Meanwhile, Luc examines Marcus’ camcorder and finds footage of a conversation where Marcus bribes him to pretend the Pathfinder had mechanical issues. This would give Marcus and Marie the freedom to proceed with their hidden agenda, away from the team’s watchful eyes.
This revelation hints that Marcus and Marie were hiding something beneath the snow. When Sebastian returns to the base, Luc tries to show him damning footage that implicates Marie, but the clip has already been erased—clearly by Marie during Luc’s sleep.
Sebastian doesn’t accept Luc’s claims and accuses him of making up lies while drunk. Luc becomes furious, feeling betrayed and believing Sebastian has chosen Marie’s side over his.
What leads to Luc’s detention?
Marie begins to act in an entirely different manner—her eyes now blood red, and suddenly she’s fluent in English. Even more disturbing, she starts referring to herself using “We,” which raises eyebrows before she kills a fellow crew member. These sudden changes suggest she may be under the control of something foreign, perhaps infected by a parasite with its own will.
After news of Gill Holland’s death spreads, Luc is quick to point fingers at Marie, but the others doubt him. Although he has no proof to back his claims, Sebastian supports him by saying he saw Marie awake in the security room the night before.
Luc then tells the group that Marcus and Marie lied about searching for oil; they were after something else entirely. He confesses that Marcus paid him to keep quiet about it.
Luc remains certain that Marie is no longer herself and tries to convince the group to confine her. However, instead of restraining Marie, the others decide to detain Luc instead.
What has taken over Marie?
Paul and Sebastian conduct an inspection on Marcus’ body and discover it has absorbed extremely high levels of radiation. They begin to suspect that everyone else might have also been exposed. Yet, Sebastian believes Gill’s death wasn’t caused by radiation, but rather by something—or someone—far more deliberate.

Elsewhere, the Professor stays close to Marie, engaging in a conversation that reveals unsettling information. What speaks through Marie seems to come from a distant planet, far removed from Earth.
Putting together the puzzle pieces, the Professor concludes that Marie is acting this way because of an alien parasite, one that survives by occupying female hosts and reproducing through them.
It becomes clear that Marcus and Marie’s mission from the beginning was to search for this strange entity buried in the snow.
How is everything brought to a close in the film?
Marie, now under the parasite’s influence, begins attacking others on the team. Bobby is the first victim, killed when Marie slits his throat. Sebastian does his best to rescue him, but the wound proves fatal and Bobby dies.
Luc proposes that they put an end to Marie’s life, but the Professor recommends a less violent route—using nerve gas to knock her out and attempt to isolate the parasite. They succeed in trapping her inside a glass containment unit and begin cutting off her oxygen supply. At this point, the screen fades to black, ending the film rather abruptly.
Such an abrupt ending leaves many questions, but also hints strongly at a follow-up film. Marie, now entirely controlled by the parasite, poses a serious danger to the rest of the team. The creature’s goal is survival and expansion, and it sees the human world as fertile ground for both.
Realising this, the group becomes determined to keep Marie from escaping into society. Yet, the situation grows more complicated. The parasite, through Marie, may attempt to manipulate the Professor into helping it escape.
Since he has shown reluctance to destroy it due to his fascination with its potential for discovery, there’s a real possibility he may trade freedom for information or advanced knowledge, endangering everyone in the process.
