Big World Achieves Global Success While Highlighting China’s Often Overlooked Disabled Population
The film premiered at the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival, winning the Audience Award. Directed by Yang Lina, Big World became one of the highest-grossing Chinese films, earning USD 99.7 million worldwide as of January 20. Its emotional storytelling and strong performances contributed to both critical acclaim and box office success.

Director Yang Lina explained that the film focuses on the experiences of China’s disabled population. She noted that although there are 80 million disabled people in China, they are rarely seen in public. Through Chunhe’s story, the film explores the lives of individuals who are often overlooked and the challenges they face within their families and society.
Chunhe Faces Family Conflict, Attempts Suicide, and Finds Strength to Pursue Dreams
Chunhe has a strained relationship with his mother, who secretly resents him. A painful childhood memory resurfaces, and he later confronts her about her feelings. Overwhelmed, Chunhe attempts suicide by choking on candies but survives after a minor operation. This experience leads to a tentative reconciliation with his mother and emphasizes the emotional struggles he has endured.
Chunhe achieves his dream of being accepted into university to study Chinese literature with the support of his grandmother. However, his romantic hopes with Yaya do not materialize. Their friendship brings him happiness but not love. The film ends with Chunhe stepping into a new chapter of independence, showing resilience and determination in the face of hardship.
