Stranger Things Season 5, Volume 1 begins with a time jump of 18 months following the events of Season 4, when Vecna’s actions left Hawkins in chaos and opened four dangerous gates. The main characters have reunited in Hawkins, but the town remains unstable and dangerous. Despite the time gap, the central mission remains the same: stop Vecna before his plan to reshape the world comes to fruition.
Eleven continues to train her powers to prepare for the confrontation with Vecna, while the other characters remain alert and ready to face the threats emerging from the Upside Down. These opening episodes establish both the high stakes and the looming dangers for the residents of Hawkins.
Holly’s Rescue, Will’s New Powers, and Vecna’s Plan Targeting Hawkins Children
The first episodes focus on a rescue mission after Holly is captured by a Demogorgon during the search for Vecna. Eleven enters the Upside Down to save Holly and reunites with Hopper in the process. Together, they uncover secrets hidden by Dr. Kay and the military, deepening the story’s tension and mystery.
Meanwhile, Nancy, Jonathan, Steve, and Dustin enter the Upside Down to track Holly but encounter a massive wall surrounding Hawkins Lab. Back in Hawkins, Mike, Lucas, Will, Joyce, Robin, and Murray attempt to protect children targeted by Vecna, but they face attacks from a horde of Demogorgons. These storylines show the complexity and danger of Vecna’s influence over both the real world and the Upside Down.
A major revelation in Volume 1 is that Will gains the ability to replicate Vecna’s powers. In one scene, his eyes turn white as he telekinetically stops and kills three Demogorgons, saving Mike, Robin, and Lucas. Will’s powers appear to be connected to his previous connection with Vecna rather than laboratory testing, and using them causes a nosebleed similar to what Eleven experiences when exerting her powers.

This ability makes Will a key player in the battle against Vecna. Volume 1 suggests that Will can tap into a hive mind and see through the eyes of Demogorgons, giving him a strategic advantage and a new way to influence events in the Upside Down.
The episodes also explain Vecna’s motives. He reveals that Will was taken because of his vulnerability, which allowed Vecna to control him. Vecna now targets more children in Hawkins, preying on those he considers weak to carry out his plan to reshape the world. Operating under the alias Mr. Whatsit, Vecna gains the trust of children like Holly while secretly holding them captive.
This method of manipulation shows the psychological depth of Vecna’s strategy. Eleven and Will now have powers to counter him, while Max, trapped in the mindscape with Holly, becomes a key ally in resisting Vecna’s control.
Kali’s Return, Max’s Mindscape, and the Upside Down Team’s Critical Mission
Kali, also known as Eight, returns in Volume 1 and is revealed to be held by the military in a lab within the Upside Down. Last seen in Season 2, Kali’s fate had been unknown, and her return answers lingering questions about her story. Her shaved head suggests she has been experimented on or used as a weapon. The military has developed methods to suppress Eleven’s powers using pulsing soundwaves, which may relate to Kali. Her presence raises questions about whether she will act as an ally or an obstacle and adds a new layer of tension for Volume 2.

Max remains in a coma in Volume 1, trapped in Vecna’s mindscape. The episodes explore her experience after nearly dying in Season 4, showing her navigating a maze of Vecna’s memories. Lucas visits her several times while she follows the sound of Kate Bush’s song “Running Up That Hill” to find a way back to the real world. The portal closes before she can escape, forcing her to remain in a safe area of the cave. Max’s struggle and her alliance with Holly give hope that she could eventually play a key role in opposing Vecna and returning to Hawkins.
Steve, Dustin, Nancy, and Jonathan form a team operating in the Upside Down. Their mission is to track Demogorgons to locate Holly and uncover more information about Hawkins Lab. They encounter the fleshy wall surrounding the lab and deduce that Holly may be held there. Although they do not immediately succeed in rescuing her, their discoveries are important for understanding Vecna’s strategy and the origins of the wall. Their exploration adds a tactical perspective to the battle and highlights the dangers of navigating the Upside Down.
Volume 1 concludes by raising the stakes for the second half of Season 5. Will’s new powers, Vecna’s capture of more children, and Max’s entrapment all point toward an intense confrontation. The military’s weakened position may allow the Hawkins group to act without interference, while Hopper and Eleven must address the challenges posed by Kali. With Volume 2 set for release on Christmas and the series finale on New Year’s Eve, the story sets up a high-stakes battle to rescue Holly, return Max, and stop Vecna from completing his plan.
