Fargo Season 1 Ending Explained: Justice on Thin Ice

A grilled cheese sandwich can't cover the scent of guilt.

Events continue from where they paused the previous week, with Lester crouched in his car just after witnessing his unsuspecting wife enter the deadly trap Malvo had originally meant for him. After the killer exits the building, Lester attempts to stage the murder as a botched robbery.

Knowing that a convincing cover-up requires a solid alibi, he heads to Lou’s diner, orders food for two, then sneaks off to alert the police. While eating his grilled cheese, he suddenly recalls that their plane tickets are still in his coat pocket.

When Molly reaches the crime scene, she quickly notices that the deceased woman is wearing Lester’s jacket, prompting her to ask if the incident has any link to what took place in Vegas.

Lester pretends to be clueless, and sorrowful, and eventually claims to be sick — a tactic that causes Molly and Bill to take him in for questioning. However, before they leave, Lester tries one last time to retrieve the plane tickets, but Molly is already one step ahead and prevents him.

A Fish Called Lester

Lou later visits the station and informs Molly that a stranger had come earlier to ask about Lester. Upon describing the man’s look, Molly wonders if it could be the same individual from her photo. Lou admits that it’s very possible.

Molly proceeds to interrogate Lester, but he stands by his fabricated story, refusing to confess — even when she appeals to his logic, warning him that Malvo won’t stop until it’s too late. By morning, Molly lays out her strategy to use Lester as bait to lure Malvo.

Gus, speaking to her over the phone, pleads that she stay off the field, citing his fear of sending his daughter to yet another funeral. One would think that after a year together, he’d finally be able to say “I love you” out loud.

Later, Bill confesses to Molly that he can’t handle the pressure and decides to resign, making her the new police chief. (Quick thought: what will the decoration on his cake be? Another firearm?)

The Nygaard’s Watch

Despite Molly’s careful planning, Malvo listens to everything through his police radio and quickly acts. He contacts the station to get Budge and Pepper’s names, then pretends to be them to cancel the FBI backup they were expecting. He then secures a second-hand car that looks like it belongs to federal agents.

At the same time, Budge and Pepper drop Lester off at home, but he refuses to let them inside. When they spot a suspicious car approaching — Malvo’s new ride — they try to question the driver. Unfortunately, the man behind the wheel is the used car salesman, whose hands have been duct-taped to the steering wheel.

While Budge and Pepper investigate, Malvo appears from behind and shoots them both in the throat. He hides their bodies with his usual precision. Soon after, Lester sees the strange car outside and quickly realizes that something terrible has happened.

Bathroom Break

With nothing standing in his way, Malvo breaks into Lester’s house, following the direction of a distressed 911 call. The noise leads him to the bathroom, but as he gets close, he steps into a bear trap that Lester had set using Chaz’s hunting tools.

Malvo screams in pain, prompting Lester to come out and shoot at him, but the gun jams after the first shot. He retreats into the bathroom while Malvo fires in his direction. Minutes later, Lester opens the door, only to find Malvo gone and blood stains on the floor.

Back at his remote cabin, Malvo tends to his injured leg using items around the house — something even Martha Stewart would applaud. Meanwhile, Gus discovers Malvo’s hideout and decides to wait.

When Malvo finally returns and tries to treat his wound — applying the “Physician, heal thyself” principle — Gus steps forward from his hiding place and shoots him five times, ending his violent spree.

When Molly arrives at the scene, Gus shows her the tapes Malvo had kept — among them, a recording of Lester asking him to murder his first wife. That gives Molly all the proof she needs to put Lester behind bars. But where exactly has Lester disappeared to?

A Cold Play

Two weeks down the line, Lester is seen in Montana trying to flee to the border on a snowmobile. Upon sighting police officers waiting for him, he turns and speeds off, but the snowmobile crashes. Forced to continue on foot, he ends up walking over thin ice, which breaks under his weight.

He plunges into the freezing water, proving that sometimes, justice comes frozen — literally. Despite all the chaos and loss, there’s a small bright side: Gus is recognized with a bravery award, and Molly finally becomes the Chief, a position she has long deserved.
