Luther The Fallen Sun Ending Explained: Hunting a New Evil and Facing Deepest Wounds

The hunt for Robey takes Luther deep into the shadows.

A long time has passed since Idris Elba last played DCI John Luther, but the brilliant detective has returned in Luther: The Fallen Sun, a fresh Netflix production. This time around, he finds himself chasing a far more twisted adversary—David Robey, portrayed by Andy Serkis.

This is a wealthy individual running a disturbing “red room” where he broadcasts acts of extreme violence across the internet. Serkis explained to Tudum that Robey, his disturbed character, is drawn to a shadowy community on the dark web where he can feel he belongs.

According to him, Robey has a theatrical flair in his actions, seeking attention while wrestling with deep loneliness and disconnection from others.

Tracking the Monster

Robey’s time as an online predator begins to dwindle once Luther and his associate, DCI Raine (played by Cynthia Erivo), discover his hideout in Estonia’s icy wilderness.

As the story builds towards its cold climax, we hear from the film’s cast and crew to understand more about how things wrap up in Luther’s most intense chapter so far—and to find out if fresh investigations might lie ahead for him.

Inside the Red Room

Inside Robey’s twisted setup, Luther and Raine find themselves cornered. The criminal has already kidnapped Raine’s daughter, Anya (played by Lauryn Ajufo), and uses her life as leverage. Soon, both officers fall into his control, with Robey demanding they injure each other or watch Anya suffocate.

That kind of pressure forces Raine into a mental struggle, as Cynthia Erivo described to Tudum. Her character is torn between refusing to inflict harm and the urgency to save her daughter. The dilemma quickly becomes secondary, though, once Anya’s life is under direct threat.

Even when the situation grows worse for her, Raine doesn’t hesitate. “If this is what it takes to rescue my daughter, then so be it,” Erivo said. “Break my body if you must. My only concern is to get my daughter out of that place alive.”

Luther’s Last Move

Luther turns the tide with a secret weapon—the disturbing details he got from Robey’s disfigured wife, Georgia. By exposing Robey’s identity and emotional weak points during a live broadcast, he provokes Robey into fleeing.

Luther chases after him, while Raine and Anya work to free themselves from a deadly trap meant to burn them alive. Their confrontation reaches its peak when both men fall through the ice into freezing waters.

Robey doesn’t survive, while Luther is rescued by Schenk (Dermot Crowley), an old ally, and taken somewhere unknown.

The next step in Luther’s journey remains partly hidden, though some hints were shared. While the movie starts with him imprisoned, it becomes clear he won’t be returning there.

With Robey having revealed his secrets to the public, another path seems to have opened for him—a new opportunity, marked by a fancy car waiting with its door wide open. The question is, who sent that car? Is it possible that MI6 is now interested in him?

Director Jamie Payne shared a small clue: “I’m aware of who’s in the car and what the next step of Neil Cross’s story is. Where we are now offers room for new kinds of stories that are quite exciting.” Elba dismissed any link between himself and James Bond, saying this character is completely different.

“This is my lane. And there’s enough ground here to match those types of action roles,” he stated. “I plan to keep playing him.”

When it comes to his thoughts about Luther, Elba shared that he still wants more for the character. He believes Luther has unresolved pain in his past that deserves proper attention, especially through big-screen storytelling. “We’ve never really dealt with his emotional baggage,” Elba said.

“I’d love to see what’s been driving him all this while. I even want to see him fall in love—just to know he’s happy, even if it’s just once.” Writer Neil Cross, the mind behind Luther’s dark world, hinted that there may be more stories on the way.

His parting words left a strong impression: “Listen. Is that clicking sound in the distance? That’s someone typing. Something is being written.” Add this critically talked-about movie to your Netflix watchlist and start streaming today.
