This version brings back the beloved story using classic retro visuals, making the experience feel both familiar and improved. It keeps everything that made the original enjoyable while adding modern ease-of-play features.
The story starts with four children who lost their parents during the clash between the Palamecian Empire and the rebel forces. As they set out on their journey, they cross paths with several allies like the white mage Minwu, Prince Gordon of Kashuan, and the pirate Leila.

These encounters shape their path and bring both joy and sorrow during their travels.
Introducing a New Type of Growth System
Rather than using a typical level-up style, this game adopts a character growth system where each attribute strengthens based on how the player fights. New terms picked up during conversations help the player uncover fresh clues and move the plot forward.
War Breaks Out in the Kingdom of Fynn
A fresh war begins after the Palamecian Empire attacks, using monsters from another dimension to strengthen its forces. Though Fynn’s army fights back bravely, they are overwhelmed and must retreat, leaving the castle behind.
Survivors head to the town of Althea to recover, among them four young orphans whose parents were killed during the siege.
Firion Survives the First Attack
As soon as gameplay starts, Firion, one of the orphans, is nearly killed along with his friends but later regains consciousness in Althea. A white mage named Minwu and a woman named Hilda have brought him back from the brink.
He learns that Guy and Maria survived too, but Maria’s brother, Leon, is still missing. The three request to join the resistance against Palamecia, but Hilda advises them to stay and heal instead. She also reveals her identity as the daughter of Fynn’s ailing king and leader of the resistance.
The Search for a Cure Begins
The group sets out to find medicine for the king but returns empty-handed, carrying only a ring given to them by a dying man. Hilda, discouraged, explains that only Mythril—a rare magical metal—can help counter Palamecia’s power. She also warns about a battleship the empire is building.
Journey to Poft and Salamand
Joined by Minwu, the trio heads to Paloom and boards a ship to Poft, where they meet Cid, a man known for building airships. Though Cid offers to fly them to other places, they decide to continue on foot to gain strength through battles.
They eventually reach Salamand and hear that local men have been forced to mine Mythril. Josef, a local, tells them his daughter is being held captive, prompting the team to rescue her from a nearby cave.
The Resistance Gains an Edge
After rescuing the miners and recovering Mythril, the team returns to Salamand and then heads back to Althea. The blacksmith Tobul crafts new weapons from the Mythril, boosting the resistance’s chances. Soon after, they learn that the empire’s battleship is nearing completion, so they rush to Bafsk to intervene.
Battling the Empire’s Dark Knight
Bafsk has fallen under the control of the empire’s “Dark Knight.” The group sneaks into a hidden cave but gets discovered during the mission. Though they face the Dark Knight, he escapes using the newly completed battleship, which then attacks Poft.
They give chase, arriving too late, only to see the city almost destroyed.
Search for the Sunfire Begins
Cid survives and tells them that only the Sunfire can destroy the ship. The group travels and sees devastation in Paloom and then back in Althea. They find the resistance members hiding underground. While Minwu remains to help the injured, Firion and his team consult with the king of Fynn.
The mission for the Goddess Bell
The King sends them to find the Goddess Bell, an item required to obtain the Sunfire. They return to Salamand, where Hilda grieves Josef’s death and urges them to go to Kashuan.
In Kashuan, they meet Gordon, who had previously failed to get the Bell. Now working together, they secure the Bell, climb the castle, claim Egil’s Torch, and obtain the Sun Flame.
An Ambush During Their Return
While returning to Althea, Cid and Hilda arrive to pick them up in an airship. But the empire’s battleship strikes again, capturing both of them. The group finds out that the ship has docked near Fynn for repairs. They decide to destroy it and save Hilda.
A Victory That Brings More Trouble
After sneaking into the ship, they manage to rescue Hilda and destroy the battleship using the Sunfire. As they flee, the Dark Knight swears revenge. Back in Althea, the king nears death. He orders Minwu to unlock the spell Ultima and instructs Firion’s team to visit Deist in search of the remaining Dragoons.
New Allies and Hidden Secrets
While heading to Deist, they meet Leila, a pirate who tries to ambush them but later joins their quest. In Deist, they discover only one Wyvern remains, poisoned in a cave. After saving it and placing its egg in the Pool of Life, they return to Althea where Hilda has disturbing news.
A Shocking Deception
In private, Hilda reveals she’s not the real one—she was replaced by an impostor during her capture. Firion and his friends defeat the fake and set out to rescue the real Hilda, held as a prize in a coliseum competition. They win the contest and, with Paul the thief’s help, escape with the real Hilda back to Althea.
The Resistance Gathers Strength
Weeks go by, and the resistance becomes stronger. Gordon takes charge of Fynn’s forces. Alongside Leila, Firion’s team is asked to take down the empire’s commander in Fynn. They succeed, clearing the way for the resistance to take over.
The Hunt for Ultima Begins

Since Minwu hasn’t returned, Hilda and Gordon ask the team to go to Mysidia to find Ultima. They need two masks—White and Black. One is hidden under Fynn Castle, and the other is on a tropical island guarded by a beast.
Solving the Mysteries of Mysidia
Once they obtain both masks, the group heads to Mysidia, a neutral city filled with magic users. After asking around and using the library, they learn the masks must be used on two statues to unlock a secret passage. This gives them access to the Crystal Rod, which can open the Mysidia Tower where the Ultima Tome is sealed.
The Leviathan’s Challenge
While heading to the tower, Leviathan—a giant sea monster—swallows them. Separated from Leila, the team finds others trapped inside, including Ricard, the last living Dragoon. Ricard joins them, and together they defeat the monster guarding a boat that leads them out.
Unlocking the Power of Ultima
Upon reaching the Mysidia Tower, the team fights through magical creatures and finds Minwu, who is trying to open the seal to Ultima. Though he breaks the seal, the effort costs him his life. Inside, the team retrieves the Ultima spell and magical crystals that enhance their abilities.
A Storm Approaches
Returning to Althea, they find it destroyed by a Cyclone summoned by the empire. They regroup in Fynn, where Leila arrives safely. As the Cyclone heads towards the city, Hilda and Gordon tell Firion’s team to fly into the storm and stop the Emperor.
The Final Battle Against the Emperor
With the help of the hatched Wyvern, the group enters the Cyclone and fights many enemies. At its center, they find the Emperor, who tries to flee. The team defeats him, and the storm clears. When they return, Hilda begins planning a celebration—only for a wounded soldier to arrive with bad news.
Leon Takes the Throne
To their shock, they learn that Leon, once their friend, has taken over the empire as the new ruler. Hilda begs them to enter Palamecia and convinces him to give up his plan. With Cid’s dying words entrusting them with his airship, they prepare for one last mission.
