Bawaal Ending Explained: The Emotional Payoff in the Film’s Final Moments

Ajay’s heart speaks louder than words as a wedding photo becomes his lifeline.

Rather than presenting a regular love story, Bawaal reflects on the struggles between a married couple, mixing their personal journey with key moments from World War 2.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the film was produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, under the banners of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment and Earthsky Pictures. Janhvi Kapoor plays the lead female role beside Varun Dhawan, while Manoj Pahwa, Mukesh Tiwari, and Prateek Pachori provide supporting performances.

From Normandy to Anne Frank’s attic their love is tested by echoes of war

The story follows Ajay, a man from a small town who marries Nisha, a beautiful woman, simply to boost his social standing. Though it was originally planned for cinemas, Bawaal was eventually made available for streaming and premiered on Amazon Prime Video on July 21, 2023.

How Do Things End Between Nisha and Ajay?

There came a point in the film when Ajay started to realise how much he depended on Nisha’s strength and support. It was the first moment they began to bond in a real way.

But the actual change in Ajay’s mindset happened at Normandy Beach, where he imagined the pain and sacrifice of soldiers who fought to free France. That experience forced him to reflect on how selfishly he had been living, while others gave everything for a greater cause.

Later, during their visit to Anne Frank’s hiding place, Ajay came face-to-face with what it means to show mercy and understanding. Nisha could see that something had changed in him, and for the first time, she felt they might be moving forward.

But when she posted a joyful video of them dancing in Paris, Ajay felt embarrassed. He believed that others would no longer take their trip seriously and would see it as mere leisure.

Is Ajay Able to Accept His Emotions for His Wife?

Even though the relationship became tense again, Ajay gradually came to accept the truth about his feelings for Nisha. Their visit to Auschwitz marked their final stop, and there, Ajay imagined himself as a victim being taken to the concentration camp. In that moment, when asked to pick only a few personal belongings, he chose their wedding photograph—showing where his heart truly was.

That moment made it clear to him that life without Nisha was empty. Though he apologised, Nisha was still unsure whether their relationship could survive. She did agree to go with him to Auschwitz, but the reality of that place overwhelmed her. She collapsed and began to have a seizure.

This time, Ajay didn’t worry about how others saw him; he stayed with her and gave her the help she needed. A Holocaust survivor then remarked that every relationship passes through its own ‘Auschwitz’—a place of pain that must be endured so that love can grow again.

Do They Remain Together After All They’ve Been Through?

By the time Ajay returned to India, the man who had once been obsessed with appearances was no longer the same. Instead of waiting for the school to dismiss him, he resigned, admitting that he had been living dishonestly. He made it known, however, that despite his faults, he had always given his students the best of himself as a teacher.

MLA Vishwas Raghuvanshi happened to be present and informed Ajay that during his absence, a surprise history exam had been organised. The students, who had been watching his educational videos from Europe, performed impressively.

Because of their improvement, the school rejected his resignation, and at that moment, Ajay began to free himself from the fake life he had been holding onto. As the film ends, Ajay is portrayed as someone who is now prepared to live truthfully. He starts to value his wife and her feelings, and he also finds renewed passion in his work as a teacher.

Bawaal is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
