The Lore Of Terraria Ending Explained: Lore, Bosses, and Cosmic Balance

Every world in Terraria holds its heartbeat and secrets.

Every time you begin a new game in Terraria, you find yourself on a freshly generated map, which is essentially a planet in the Terraria universe. These worlds are created by the Gods to maintain a cosmic balance.

Each planet has a sentient nature, meaning it can feel the existence of every creature residing within it. This balance encompasses everything, from the flora to the fauna. The world you begin your journey on is said to hold remarkable potential.

Hallow, Crimson, & Corruption

On every planet in Terraria, the elements of Hallow, Crimson, and Corruption exist as part of the natural equilibrium. These three biomes serve as “defense mechanisms” that can pose a serious threat to anyone who challenges them. Each of these biomes plays a unique role in maintaining the balance of the world.

The Wall Of Flesh

The Wall of Flesh marks the final challenge in pre-Hardmode. Once this monstrous boss is defeated, the game transitions into Hardmode. This transformation leads to the creation of a Hallow biome and accelerates the spread of the Corruption and Crimson biomes.

The Wall of Flesh is intrinsically tied to the Hallow. It acts as both a Guardian and the Master of the World, and with its death, the world begins the search for a new Guardian, while the Hallow struggles against the forces seeking control.

Order Of The Guide

The history of these events is passed down by the Order of the Guide, of which your first NPC belongs. The Guide’s mission is to aid you in exploring the world. However, to summon the Wall of Flesh, you must use the Voodoo Doll of the Guide and drop it into the lava of the Underworld.

The connection between the Guide and the Wall of Flesh is that the Guide serves as a protector of the world, but once he is killed, chaos is unleashed upon the land.

Cthulhu

Cthulhu is a monstrous and enigmatic entity that exists to wreak havoc and control the world you inhabit. However, this creature never fully reveals itself. The Dryads, a race of beings, fought against Cthulhu to protect the world.

Though they couldn’t destroy it completely, they managed to tear out its essential parts, such as the eyes and brain. After removing these organs, the remnants of Cthulhu were banished to the dark side of the moon, where it remains, awaiting to be summoned again.

In the game, only one Dryad remains, and she becomes available once you defeat certain bosses such as the Eye of Cthulhu, Eater of Worlds, Brain of Cthulhu, or Skeletron. The fragments of Cthulhu still manifest in various forms, such as the Demon Eye, which is a minion of the creature, and the Brain of Cthulhu, which is its actual brain.

The Lunatic Cult

The Lunatic Cultist, a boss encountered in Hardmode, appears at the Dungeon entrance after you have killed enough nearby Cultists. This cult leader aims to revive Cthulhu and bring about the world’s destruction.

Unfortunately, this plan is almost complete, as the Cultists have captured the Mechanic and forced her to assist in finishing the resurrection of Cthulhu. The Mechanic’s task is to complete the mechanical brain of Cthulhu, a crucial part of this sinister plot.

The Dungeon

The process of reviving Cthulhu takes place in the Dungeon, a place where you can find and unlock the Mechanic NPC. Originally, the Dungeon was managed by an Old Man who was cursed by the Cult. This curse now grants the Old Man the ability to summon Skeletron, a powerful entity linked to Cthulhu.

The Old Man makes two important statements: “I cannot let you enter until you free me of my curse,” and “My master cannot be summoned under the light of day,” both of which suggest that he is under the curse of Cthulhu. By defeating Cthulhu, you free him, and the Old Man transforms into the Clothier NPC.

Defeating Cthulhu

Before your involvement, the world existed in a state of turmoil. But as the champion of this world, you strive to restore balance and peace by defeating Cthulhu and its minions. In Terraria, the final boss is the Moon Lord, which many believe to be Cthulhu, due to their striking similarities in appearance.

The Moon Lord is also missing key organs and a lower body, and considering that Cthulhu was banished to the moon, it’s easy to draw the conclusion that the Moon Lord is, in fact, Cthulhu.

Celestial Pillars

The Celestial Pillars emerge after the Lunatic Cultist is defeated. There are four of these pillars, each representing a challenge that you must overcome. Once all four pillars are destroyed, the Moon Lord will appear.

The Dryads once used these pillars to imprison Cthulhu on the moon, and defeating them is believed to release Cthulhu, allowing you to confront and defeat it once and for all.
